While working on a project to integrate Magento store to work with WooCommerce, one of the things to consider is the URL structure in WordPress that is different from Magneto. For example, the shop categories and tags will always have the “/shop/” in their slug.

I found that when you create a taxonomy and delete it, it’s not permanantly deleted and WordPress keeps the texonomy in the database. In any future case that you’ll need to create the same taxonomy term again, WordPress will create alternative url it will concatenate the taxonomy name to the url (taxonomy-name-category-name) and you will end up with Ugly url’s.

In order to solve it, the simple solution is to go to phpMyAdmin and to delete the old category slugs from the terms table in your DB. This post is a great step by step guide premaritally delete old taxonomies from your WordPress DB.

If you need to map your URL’s and and create URL redirects (changes in path, old products in your store, etc’), you should check the redirection plugin, this plugin will allow you to create redirects in WordPress admin or to import from .htaccess file in bulk.

One of the most difficult tasks when running an eCommerce site is to maintain your catalog, there are many things that you need to change frequently and things you want to improve – Product descriptions, images, variations, stock status, prices, SEO and much more.

Changing your catalog can be a tedious work that takes a lot of time, resources and Energy, especially when you maintain more then one store or large catalogs. Use WooCommerce Product CSV Import Suite for a fast & easy Store catalog updates.

This extension makes your life easier, you can Import and export both products and variations into a CSV file, make your changes in bulk and upload the file, ans that’s it! Everything is taken care of at once!

Another great use of this extension is to create/export CSV feed files that can be used to maintain your catalog on shopping compression, affiliates, marketplaces or any other websites/services that have the option to upload products feed to sync your catalog.

Product CSV Import Suite

Pros – saves time on catalog management, works with almost any fields, create feeds for other services, and from version 1.0.3 the WordPress SEO by Yoast meta fields were added!

Cons – There is no way to create feed templates for export (i.e create and save different feed formats by service: SEO maintenance exports, Amazon export, etc), Another Highly desired feature is the option to schedule the feed (and feed templates) to run on a regular basis and ftp or upload to DropBox the feed file..

Overall, if you run a store on WordPress WooCommerce, do not hesitate, purchase this extension, play with it a bit, export your catalog, see how the data looks in the file, change some data in the file and upload, now check your products to see the changes and let me know what you think.

I recently decided to move one of my WordPress Blogs to a new hosting, it’s a simple move where the domain and site content do not change. These are the steps I followed for a quick and easy move:

Backup your WordPress database using phpMyAdmin

Download/Upload all your WordPress files using FTP

create a new database in your new hosting

Edit wp-config.php

Import your WordPress blog to your new Database.

for more details, Checkout HostGator complete guide here

in case you wish to start fresh and just to copy the content of your blog to the new hosting, test and then direct the domain to the new site, you need to install WordPress on the new hosting, install theme, plugins and then export/import your Blog Content. in this case when you change the DNS to point the domain to the new hosting, you will have to change the domain URL in WordPress.

Backup tip!

I had issue with my FTP backups, I looked for an easy way to backup my files and found the WordPress to DropBox backup plugin that has been created to give you piece of mind that your blog is backed up on a regular basis.

WooDojo is a “functionality suite” plugin from Woothemes which adds additional functionality to your WordPress installation. The idea behind this new WordPress plugin is to create generic version of specific functionality and widgets that have only been included so far in wooFramework and in specific premium themes.

In the past, this kind of functionality has been abstracted from the WooFramework, and was only available within WooThemes themes and it wasn’t very friendly in terms of plugging & playing when switching between themes. WooThemes ares bundling widgets and functionality from the themes and WooFramework to be more module like. You can install WooDojo in any other theme and then activate WooSidebars and more, this makes it easy to take some awesome Woo functionality around to other themes. Much more should be coming as we go!

The ethos behind WooDojo is to use/include only the functionality you need. For example, if you’d like to have a Tabs widget but don’t need to customize your sidebars, you’d install only the Tabs widget, thus keeping your installation as lean as possible.

The functionality that included in this plugin first release include:

WooSidebars. Specify custom widget areas for any posts, pages, archives etc. on your site.

Tabs. Include WooThemes elegant tabber widget in any widget space.

Shortlinks. Add your URL shortener of choice & easily display shortened URL’s for all posts & pages.

Custom Code. Easily add custom CSS to your site.

Login Branding. Replace the default WordPress branding on the login screen with your own brand identity.

Social Widgets. A collection of widgets to connect to your online social profiles

The big questions is in case I already use a WooTheme, Should I install the WooDojo plugin? Well, it won’t conflict with anything in the WooFramework. and as Woo claims, the functionality that is offered by the plugin will be phased out from framework in the future so you’ll need to install WooDojo plugin anyways in the future..

How many times have you found yourself in a need to send a large file, and ended up using burned CD’s or Flash Memory? Cloud and file transfer tools allow you to have a private network or to share large files in a very easy way.

Dropbox is a simple yet, very powerful cloud file backup and sharing service. you can use it without any special knowledge of computers or internet. Dropbox helps in handling and sharing large files/documents. Dropbox provides 2GB storage for free and extra 250MB for every every friend you invite and register. If you are a heavy user and need more space, you can check out their premium plans.

After you create a Dropbox account, and install it on your computer, it will create a folder named Dropbox that its content will sync with their website and with others that you choose to share data with. Any file you save to the Dropbox folder on your computer, will automatically be in sync with all of your computers that have this application installed. Dropbox makes it super easy to share with others, super easy way to work with suppliers, freelancers or as a small network between your desktop, laptop and/or ipad.

If you just need to move one time large files that are more than the free 2GB that you get from Dropbox, use zeZebra, file transfer application with a great looking interface that lets you transfer large files in a simple and easy-to-use way. It enables you to send files of any size to any person. zeZebra doesn’t store your files on their servers, they don’t know what your files contain, and no one but you and your receivers (with your permission) can view them. It’s a closed circle between you and whoever you share your files or media with.

I was searching for a way to show screenshot preview of sites in WordPress instead of uploading images, this way, if a site changes, It will show the updated version, extremly helpful when you have a directory that needs to be updated (less maintanance…)

Example:

[ss_screenshot width='600' site='http://www.zorem.com/']
function wpr_snap($atts, $content = null) {
extract(shortcode_atts(array(
"snap" => 'http://s.wordpress.com/mshots/v1/',
"url" => 'http://www.internoetics.com',
"alt" => 'Image text',
"w" => '400', // width
"h" => '300' // height
), $atts));

$img = '<img src="' . $snap . '' . urlencode($url) . '?w=' . $w . '&h=' . $h . '" alt="' . $alt . '">';
return $img;
}
add_shortcode("snap", "wpr_snap");
Than add this to your theme code or to any post/page
[ss_screenshot width='600' site='http://www.zorem.com/']
